Beautiful (FREE) Olden Cruise Port Walk - P&O Iona Norway Cruise - April 2024
We visited the beautiful town of Olden as part of our P&O Iona Norway Cruise in April 2024.
Even as we sailed along the fjord on the approach to Olden it was clear that it was going to be a fantastic day. The sky was clear and the Sun rose into a beautiful blue sky.
Olden is only a small location and it seemed to be a common theme for cruise passengers to have to queue and wait at both the Loen Sky Lift and for the buses to the Briksdalsbre glacier, so since we much prefer to relax and do our own thing, we decided to just go for a walk in the local area.
We knew there was a nice river and lake to the South of Olden, with some small waterfalls along the way, so we decided to walk that way. We didn't really know how far we would walk, but figured we would just keep walking until we got slightly tired/hungry/thirsty, then turn around and come back :)
As it happened, we walked for what would have been around an hour, if we hadn't kept stopping to admire the views and take photos and video. The walk really was amazing, just so relaxing and peaceful with fantastic scenery all around.
Basically, we walked as far as the Bus stop 115, Fjordvegen, then turned around and pretty much took the same route back. According to Google, this hike would take 1 hour and 10 minutes.
The weather was definitely warmer than we expected, mainly because there was no wind and the Sun was shining brightly. As we had started the day wearing various layers including thermals, we did have to remove a few layers during our walk.
After we had returned to the area close to the cruise dock, we had a really nice drink in a little cafe/pub(/guesthouse?) right next to the cruise ship, the Mølla Gjestehus. This has an upstairs balcony, which is great to just sit and relax, especially by this point our little legs ached a little :)
Although we didn't know it at the time, the staff of Mølla Gjestehus, gave the ship a fantastic send off as we departed, waving flags and playing music. Loved it! :)
All in all, we will never forget our time in Olden, it really was one of our favourite and most memorable port stops. I'm sure that we will be visiting again at some point in the future, we just hope that we get the same weather, and that it doesn't actually lose any of it's charm if it gets busier.

P&O Iona Norway Cruise - Stavanger - Visiting The Swords in Rock Statue for less than £7

This was the first port stop on our P&O Iona Norway Cruise where we stopped at Stavanger. We have visited Stavanger previously and the last time we were there, we went on a very nice boat trip up to Lysefjord & Preikestolen. As we approached Stavanger this time though, the weather wasn't looking good with rain forecast, so we decided against a boat trip this time, and instead decided to find ou...

Join us on our Embarkation Day in Southampton as we set off on our 7-day cruise to Norway on the spectacular P&O Iona cruise ship! Boarding was a breeze, and we were on board by 1 pm, ready to indulge in the lunchtime buffet. The cabins were ready at 1:30 pm, allowing us to settle into our room nice and early. Having been on Iona before just after Covid, it was lovely to be back on board. We sp...

We loved Juneau! It was a lovely place. We stopped there twice and on the other day we went for a walk up into one of the trails. That gave us another incredible memory where we came across a lovely black bear crossing the track. We seriously thought about getting the bus to the glacier, but we’ve seen some fantastic glaciers in both Alaska and Iceland, so thought that we might be a little underwhelmed with the glacier itself (although I’m sure the walk there was very nice), so decided on our little walk instead. • @BrainzIOW
      @BrainzIOW Місяць тому

We were using Google Maps on our phone so knew when we were approaching the correct stop, but despite that, the bus driver did indicate when we were there anyway. We didn't need to ask him, he just did it. You don't need to pay the $5 visitor pass unless you actually go into those designated areas. That doesn't include walking to the waterfall.

Great tip for the savings and the area to visit. Were you given a bus schedule to know when to be at the return bus stop? How long of a walk from drop off to the entrance of the park? Was the return bus pickup location the same as when you were dropped off? This is definitely a lot of savings. Thank you.

We knew there was a bus at least every hour, so we didn’t fret too much about exactly what time we got back to the bus stop. We used Google Maps to check the journey and it actually has the bus times on it. It took us about 30 minutes or so to walk from the bus stop down to the visitor centre. It’s a nice scenic flat walk though. The bus picks up at the same place as the drop off point.

@@BrainzIOW That’s good. We’re thinking to spend a good part of the time between going to the glacier and the falls. Agree, then no issues with one hour schedule. Thanks again and we do very much appreciate you both.

I'll be there mid-June, 2024. My ship will only be in Juneau from 7:00AM to 1:30PM, so I'm taking the ship excursion to save time. I believe that they will drop me off at the visitor's center, so it's only 1 mile walk to the falls. This should give me time to check out the Steep creek and Moraine Ecology trails. What time of year were you there?

Real cost of the route you chose should be $14 because you both visited/filmed in fee areas: -The Pavilion (note the yellow fee sign above Amanda's head and below the white pavilion sign at 3:26) -The Photo Point detour from 3:40-4:26 (the fee area sign is over your right shoulder in the background 4:00) www.fs.usda.gov/detail/tongass/about-forest/offices/?cid=stelprdb5400800

Hello. Yep, the 2nd cabin was 408 which has a clearer view, other than that it’s the same layout.
